Facebook unveils fibre-deploying robot bombyx

Facebook Connectivity thinks it has developed an alternative in the form of a cable-crawling robot called Bombyx. Named after the Latin word for ‘silkworm’, Bombyx operates by being attached to existing overhead power cables, which it then craws along, wrapping fibre optic cables around them in the process.

76% of manufacturers plan to use private 5g networks by 2024

Accedian's new analyst research on the future of 5G in manufacturing, conducted in partnership with Analysys Mason, found that while 76% of manufacturers plan to use private 5G locally by 2024, key barriers to adoption include management complexity, difficulty of deployment and high costs.

Tim heads to space to deliver broadband to rural Italians 

Customers in remote areas of Italy will be able to connect to TIM’s broadband services from today thanks to a deal with Eutelsat. TIM, says customers outside its fibre or fixed wireless access areas will be able to get up to 100Mbps download and 5Mbps upload via the satellite service.

google gives security keys to 10,000 high-risk users

Google is giving free physical USB security keys to 10,000 users at high risk of being hacked, such as politicians and human rights activists. The USB keys provide two-factor authentication.

Zella DC has deployed its first micro data centre in Japan as part of an edge computing solution aimed at telecom operators. The Zella Hut, an outdoor version of the Zella Pro will be part of an edge computing solution developed by Internet Initiative Japan Inc.

Ericsson, nokia and t-systems back google's distributed cloud launch

Google is announcing its distributed cloud portfolio of hardware and software that the giant says will extend infrastructure to the edge. Ericsson and Nokia executives gave their approval to the development.
