AT&T suffers data breach impacting 9m customers

The operator has informed affected customers after a marketing vendor suffered a security failure in January. The breach exposed Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) for around nine million wireless customers.

OneWeb company close to taking the internet global

It takes the company's in-orbit broadband constellation to over 580. With one more launch in the coming weeks, OneWeb will have enough satellites overhead to deliver an internet connection anywhere on Earth.

Vinyl records outsell CDs for first time in decades

Vinyl record sales outperformed CDs in the US for the first time since 1987, according to a new report. Just over 41 million vinyl records were sold in 2022, to the tune of $1.2bn (£.99bn). Only 33 million CDs were sold, amounting to $483m.

Tiny data centre used to heat public swimming pool

The heat generated by a washing-machine-sized data centre is being used to heat a Devon public swimming pool. The computers inside the white box are surrounded by oil to capture the heat - enough to heat the pool to about 30C 60% of the time, saving Exmouth Leisure Centre thousands of pounds.

Meta lay-offs: Facebook owner to cut 10,000 staff

Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has announced plans to cut 10,000 jobs.

It will be the second wave of mass redundancies from the tech giant, which laid off 11,000 employees last November.

TikTok says US threatens ban if China stake not sold

The US government says TikTok should be sold or else face a possible ban in the country. The video-sharing app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, is accused of posing a national security risk through data gathered from millions of users.

Arelion launches Prague PoP at CRA’s DC Tower data centre

Arelion confirms the provision of a new point of presence (PoP) at the DC Tower data centre in Prague, the Czech Republic’s capital city. The news marks Arelion's second PoP in Prague deployed with the aime of supporting current and future growth in traffic, by providing direct access to the global Arelion AS1299 IP backbone, with high-speed IP Transit, Cloud Connect, and Internet Exchange Connect services.

Rolls-Royce gets funding for moon base nuclear reactor

It is hoped that the eventual lunar base will prove a suitable home for astronauts, where they could work on science experiments. Rolls-Royce is aiming to have its nuclear reactor ready by 2029.

Inmarsat’s I-6 satellite has connected to new ground stations in Perth and Merredin, Western Australia. The company says that this development comes as it aims to provide a significant upgrade to communications availability in the region.
