STC move on Spanish company marks latest venture by state-owned Gulf groups into Europe. STC, which is majority-owned by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, said that it had acquired 4.9 per cent of Telefónica’s shares and was using other financial instruments that would lift its stake to 9.9 per cent if approved by regulators.

Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) has announced that it will start to switch off 3G services in 2025 as part of its ongoing network transformation. VMO2 said this will help it to further expand and upgrade its 4G and 5G connectivity and reduce energy consumption.
