china mobile preps world's largest green optical network

The company further said that the green all-optical switching hub reduces the number of cabinets per site from 5–8 to only one, reducing equipment room footprint by about 70% and power consumption by around 30%.

tesla investigated over 'phantom braking' problem

The US government is investigating reports of Tesla cars braking unexpectedly on motorways. It received 354 complaints in the past nine months and its investigation will cover approximately 416,000 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from 2021-22.

Syria has finally awarded the third mobile telecommunications licence it has been promising to deliver for over ten years. The winning operator is Wafa Telecom, which has received a licence from Syria's telecommunications authority.

Tonga's submarine cable reconnects to the world

The Polynesian nation's wired link to the internet was severed by the January 2022 volcanic eruption. Local carrier Digicel's announcement that the cable connecting Tonga to Fiji has been restored to operation will therefore be welcome.

industry sets out vision for 6g for 2030 and beyond

The industry’s Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN) set out today what operators see as the main uses that will drive investment in 6G from 2030 onwards. It has published a white paper – complied by leading operators, vendors and research institutes – outlining which 6G use cases they predict will emerge in the future decade.

uae: virgin mobile announces new biodegradable sim cards

The move is in line with the UAE’s vision to create a vibrant new green economy. The biodegradable SIM cards “are the most sustainable option available in the UAE for customers whose devices cannot yet accept eSIMs”. It requires no plastic.

Ukraine's banks have been hit by cyber attacks, according to the country's minister of digital transformation.Authorities in Ukraine said this week they had seen online warnings that hackers were set to launch major attacks on government agencies, banks and the defence sector.

Virgin Hyperloop, a futuristic train service that promised a new era of travel for passengers, will be focusing on cargo instead, it has revealed. The company told BBC News the change in direction was due to global supply-chain issues and Covid.

malaria: aberystwyth university drone system used in zanzibar

Drone and smartphone technology developed at Aberystwyth University is being used to fight malaria in Tanzania's semi-autonomous islands of Zanzibar. Scientists from the university have been finding water pools that malaria-carrying mosquitos use to breed. It is the first time drone technology has been used within a widespread intervention programme.

A Cornish start-up has developed a technique using artificial intelligence to predict what the surface of the UK looks like under gloomy skies. The satellite technology is being targeted at the agricultural sector to help farmers better manage their crops.
