Running For the One in Ten

Written by Ilex Community Manager | 15-Nov-2022 11:33:18

Our PR Apprentice, Tilly, is running the Edinburgh marathon in May for Endometriosis UK

One in ten women have endometriosis, according to the National Library of Medicine. That equates to 176 million across the globe, a seemingly impossible number to imagine. Tilly is running to support the women battling the debilitating condition, hoping to educate others and open up conversations about endometriosis.

The Reason Why

Endometriosis is a condition where cells similar to those in the lining of the womb grow elsewhere in the body and react to the menstrual cycle each month causing inflammation, pain and the formation of scar tissue.

Endometriosis UK is a charity that sits close to my heart and is the motivation for me to run the marathon. I’ve watched first-hand as women around me have been stripped of their ability to perform everyday tasks due to the pain endometriosis causes. Being in the same position myself, I want to do however much I can to help.

On average it takes eight years from the onset of symptoms to get a diagnosis and not enough action is being taken to help women in their fight for answers.

Over the years I have sat in countless doctors' and hospital rooms, in front of those who dismiss my pain and feed me with hormones and painkillers to mask any symptoms. The truth is education is lacking for professionals to truly understand the condition and that is where change needs to be implemented to provide answers to those who feel so isolated and ignored. Endometriosis UK is standing up for this change and paving the way for the women who will follow me.

Small Steps for Big Changes

Having dabbled in running and being a gym member over the years, I know the drive that goes into training. With that being said, marathon training is unlike any other, both mentally and physically. Consisting of interval training, long runs and strength training, it is definitely intense, but the key is to follow a solid plan, fuel your body and maintain a smile every step of the way.

My strength comes from the knowledge that whatever I raise will go towards the care and attention of the women who battle every day for normality within their bodies. Not being able to show up 100% for yourself or the people around you is tough when every basic task feels like a huge obstacle.

I never thought I would run a marathon, but here I am. I hope to stand as an inspiration to show others that with any challenge that lies ahead, if you break it down and keep your focus, you can achieve.

To the women out there struggling, you are not alone - we’ve got this.

I am so grateful to Ilex for supporting me in fighting for recognition, understanding and awareness of endometriosis. The team are right by my side through the process with their motivation and strength.
