Britishvolt bought by Australian firm Recharge Industries

Australian firm Recharge Industries has bought the defunct battery maker Britishvolt out of administration. Britishvolt had planned to build a £4bn battery plant near the Port of Blyth in Northumberland but it collapsed last month after running out of money.

The high-tech weeding machines cutting herbicide use

No-one likes weeding, but new technology is helping farmers around the world tackle weeds in a more efficient and environmentally friendly way. Deanna Kovar from US farming equipment giant John Deere says that the company's new tractor-pulled weed sprayer can reduce herbicide use by two thirds.

Canada bans TikTok on government devices

Canada will ban video app TikTok from all government-issued devices starting on Tuesday. The decision follows a review by Canada's chief information officer, and the app "presents an unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security", a government spokesperson said in a statement.

Vodafone Qatar picks VMware to enhance 5G rollout

VMware has been selected by Vodafone Qatar to modernise its cloud platform and enhance its 5G rollout. The VMware Telco Cloud Platform-5G Edition and VMware Cloud Foundation with Tanzu will allow Vodafone Qatar to bring new services to market and supports its digitisation ambitions in line with its Qatar National Vision 2030.

Nokia looks to the future with a rebrand

Finnish kit vendor Nokia unveiled a new logo on the eve of Mobile World Congress 2023, but struggled to explain why. Nokia held court in Intercontinental Hotel in Barcelona to unveil it’s new logo – or brand identity as marketing types would phrase it – the spirit of which is about severing ties with its consumer facing past  (back when it used to sell phones) and to present a new one that’s apparently more reflective of its current B2B role.

Lack of diversity in tech ‘alarming’, TTC says

There is an “alarming” lack of diversity among senior technology personnel according to The Tech Talent Charter’s (TTC) latest Diversity in Tech report. The report found that gender diversity is 6% lower in senior roles than in tech roles overall and ethnic diversity almost halves in senior roles.

True, Dtac complete largest Southeast Asia telco merger

The merger between True Corporation and Total Access Communication – AKA Dtac has been completed according to Dtac’s majority owner Telenor. The deal is the largest-ever telco merger in Southeast Asia by combined enterprise value. Telenor and CP Group will be equal partners with a 30.3% ownership stake in the new company.

Netflix hits back at calls for 'entertainment tax'

Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters has pushed back on calls for an entertainment tax on streaming companies proposed by internet service provider (ISP) partners. At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in a keynote address, Peters said that a tax on creative content would reduce investment, “hurting the creative community”.
