In a windswept corner of a military site on Salisbury Plain a small aircraft jet engine is undergoing tests that could one day lead to huge changes within the aviation industry. The engine itself is almost completely conventional. It is a Rolls-Royce AE-2100A gas turbine, a design used widely on regional aeroplanes around the world.

Orange signs roaming agreement with 1&1
Orange has concluded a long-term agreement for the provision of international roaming services with Germany’s 1&1 mobile network. 1&1 has already launched Europe’s first fully virtualised mobile network based on the Open RAN technology and will now add roaming services to its repertoire.

Nokia plans to open a new 5G and 6G research and development centre in Amadora, Portugal. The centre will create 100 new jobs within the next two years and will advance research in technologies that are vital components of current 5G and future 6G networks.

Iron Mountain Data Centers Expands EMEA and North America footprint
The first investment saw Iron Mountain acquire of XData Properties, one of the largest data centre parks in Madrid. The site has enough power to develop 79MW over the coming years. In addition to the existing 3MW data centre on site, the first 20MW data centre is due to be completed by 2024.

NTT DOCOMO CALLS IN SAMSUNG FOR OPEN RAN
Samsung Electronics today announced the company is supplying a variety of 5G radios to support NTT DOCOMO’s Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) expansion. Samsung will now provide a range of Open RAN-compliant 5G radios covering all of the Time Division Duplex (TDD) spectrum bands held by the operator.

SpaceX plans giant satellite antenna to enable cellphone services
SpaceX is strengthening its programme to introduce satellite-to-cellphones services by stepping up recruitment. Fibrus: Belfast broadband firm wins major GB contract
The Belfast-based broadband company Fibrus has won its first major contract in Great Britain.
The £108m scheme will upgrade broadband for more than 60,000 hard-to-reach homes and businesses across Cumbria in north-west England.
It is part of the UK government's Project Gigabit, which aims to improve broadband across the UK.

2.7bn people still shut off from online world, says ITU
The price of internet access is going down, but 2.7 billion people – roughly one-third of the global population – remain unconnected to the internet.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations agency, says the global median price of mobile-broadband services dropped from 1.9% to 1.5% of average gross national income (GNI) per capita.
