DRC national fibre network to go ahead in 2021, says Egyptian supplier
Egyptian firm Benya Capital has confirmed its plans to build a 16,000km fibre network in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) next year.
Osama Qadan, operations manager of Benya Capital, told Augustin Kibassa Maliba, DRC’s minister of posts, telecommunications and new information and communication technologies, that the network will provide high-speed services to mobile operators across the country.

Mobile networks banned from selling locked phones
The UK's mobile networks are to be forbidden from selling phones locked to their services from December 2021.
Regulator Ofcom said unlocking handsets could often be a complicated process, and this was discouraging owners from switching providers at the end of their contracts.

Telstra to enter Canada with Toronto PoP and infrastructure upgrade
Telstra confirms plans to expand its network into Canada with the launch of a new point-of-presence (PoP) in Toronto and upgrading infrastructure that will connect Canada to its trans-Pacific subsea cable networks.
The subsea cable networks will carry data from Canada into the Asia-Pacific region, connecting to Telstra’s existing subsea cable system, which currently carries nearly one-third of all Asia-Pacific internet traffic.

BT signs 5G deal with Ericsson to help ditch Huawei
BT has signed a deal to use Ericsson's 5G radio antennas, base stations and other equipment to upgrade its EE mobile network.
BT said in time it expected 50% of all its 5G traffic to be transmitted via the Swedish company's kit.

Ghanaian government buys AirtelTigo for $25 million
The government of Ghana is to buy AirtelTigo as approved by the board of parent company Bharti Airtel yesterday.
The transaction will see the Ghanaian government take 100% of the company’s shares, plus its customers, assets and agreed liabilities. The total sum paid for the operator was reported to be Rs 184.1 crore, just under US$25 million.
